Re-sleeving and re-kitting are two key processes used to restore worn hydraulic components, most commonly brake and clutch cylinders, to safe, reliable operation without the cost of full replacement.

Re-sleeving involves machining the worn or pitted bore of a cylinder (such as a master or wheel cylinder) and fitting a precision insert, usually made from stainless steel or another corrosion-resistant material. The old bore is bored out to a slightly larger diameter, the sleeve is pressed or bonded in, and then it’s honed to the exact internal size required. This restores the sealing surface to better-than-original condition, improves corrosion resistance, and often extends the life of the component significantly. Re-sleeving is especially valuable for older, rare, or performance applications where new parts are expensive, unavailable, or of questionable quality.

Re-kitting focuses on the internal service parts—seals, cups, boots, springs, and other consumables that wear or harden over time. An R-kit (rebuild kit) contains these components matched to the specific cylinder or caliper. During re-kitting, the unit is stripped, cleaned, inspected, and then rebuilt using the new seals and hardware. This restores proper hydraulic function, eliminates leaks, and brings back consistent pedal feel and performance.

Used together, re-sleeving and re-kitting provide a comprehensive overhaul for Brake and Clutch hydraulics: the hard surfaces are renewed and upgraded, and all soft parts are replaced. The benefits include improved reliability, better braking performance, longer service life, and often a lower total cost compared with sourcing brand-new assemblies particularly in classic, motorsport, or heavy-duty environments.
